‘…writing on art replaces presence by absence by substituting the abstraction of language for the real thing.’

Patricia Piccinini

THE FIELD, 2018 & THE BOND, 2018

Generally, I am not a big fan of art fairs. I always joke that they are the KMart of the art world - intense fluro lights, everything under one roof, false walls dividing up white, generic spaces. Rarely conducive to the vision of the artist or doing justice to the art as a whole. However, I was surprised by Sydney Contemporary. The fact that it is in one of my favourite spaces in Sydney, Carriageworks, helped squash my prejudice against fairs. The architecture made this a rich experience and created a space that feels right for presenting the quality of work selected for Sydney Contemporary.

The Field, 2018 and The Bond, 2018 by Patricia Piccinini presented beautifully in a silent room out of the way of the main exhibition space. Intimately disconcerting is the best way to describe Piccinini’s art.
